Automation as a Key to HOGS aiTMS Platform Scalability

Hogs is an innovative technology company and a leader in its niche within the Central and Eastern European logistics market. At the heart of its operations and its key product is the proprietary, advanced HOGS aiTMS platform.

The platform is designed for comprehensive transport and freight forwarding management. Built for maximum efficiency, HOGS aiTMS utilizes advanced algorithms to optimize routes, manage fleets, and monitor shipments in real time. It is a crucial working tool for both Hogs’ internal team and its clients, enabling them to automate and streamline their logistics processes.

Challenges

Unscalable Infrastructure and Downtime Risk

The HOGS aiTMS platform is the operational backbone for logistics companies. Every minute of system unavailability translates to real financial losses and supply chain delays, which is why resilience is not a luxury, but a fundamental business requirement. Klienci HOGS oczekują gwarancji ciągłości działania, a utrata dostępu do platformy w godzinach szczytu mogłaby sparaliżować ich operacje.

Technically, the application experiences rapid spikes in traffic, so its architecture must be able to scale dynamically to handle these peaks without performance degradation.

The decision to migrate from on-premise infrastructure in OVHcloud to the AWS cloud was a strategic step aimed at solving fundamental problems that hindered the development of the HOGS platform. The previous environment generated a number of technical and business issues:

Lack of scalability:

During periods of increased traffic, the application became unavailable, leading to user frustration and business losses.

Cost inefficiency:

The lack of scaling also applied to the database, which generated constant, high costs.

Lack of Automation:

The manual process of deploying new application versions slowed down time-to-market and increased the risk of human error.

Reactive approach:

Lack of 24/7 monitoring meant long incident response times, and the HOGS team, instead of focusing on innovation, constantly had to “put out fires.”

Collaboration with Tenesys has been a valuable experience and an opportunity for growth. Thanks to their support, we built a scalable environment for the HOGS platform while gaining substantial practical technical knowledge. This partnership has allowed us not only to pursue our growth strategy with greater confidence, but also to expand our competencies and better prepare for future challenges.

Our role

From Design to Full Automation

HOGS sought a partner with documented experience in complex cloud migrations and the implementation of modern DevOps practices. Our task was not only to carry out the migration but also to design and build a new, automated architecture from scratch, ready for future development, and to provide professional maintenance for it.

Scope of Work

In response to the identified problems, we presented a clear plan for transforming the HOGS environment:

Step 1: Design and Migration Plan: We started by preparing a detailed proposal for a new AWS infrastructure, based on containerization, and a precise migration plan.

Step 2: Adaptation and Automation: We adapted the application to run in a Kubernetes (EKS) environment, creating dedicated Helm charts and building fully automated CI/CD processes in GitLab from scratch.

Step 3: Testing and Data Migration: After completing tests on the test cluster, we performed a zero-downtime data migration from the MariaDB database on a virtual server to a fully managed AWS RDS service.

Step 4: Launch and Responsibility Transfer: We launched the application in the new production environment and immediately took over proactive 24/7 monitoring and maintenance of the entire infrastructure, assuming full responsibility for its stability. Monitoring was based on Telegraf, Loki, and notifications from AWS Health sent using custom Lambdas.

Impact and Business Benefits

The implementation of the new architecture immediately yielded tangible results. Manual and risky deployments were replaced by a fully automated CI/CD pipeline using ArgoCD, which allowed for an increased number of deployments.

Key Results:

  • High Availability (Multi-AZ): Elimination of single points of failure.
In case of issues, traffic and the database seamlessly switch to backup infrastructure.
  • Dynamic Scaling: The environment (EKS + Karpenter) automatically adjusts resources to the load, effortlessly handling sudden traffic spikes.
  • Business Continuity Security (DR): Rigorous disaster recovery metrics were guaranteed: data loss below 15 min (RPO) and system recovery below 1h (RTO).
  • Secure, Automated Deployments: Implementing CI/CD pipelines (ArgoCD)
with tests replaced risky, manual application updates.
  • Proactive 24/7 Monitoring: Immediate detection and resolution of incidents by the on-call team, before users are affected.
  • Cost Optimization: Significant savings due to automatic database scaling (AWS Lambda) during periods of lower traffic.

Further Cooperation

Today, the HOGS platform operates in a new reality – one where traffic spikes are a natural part of business, not a source of stability concerns. Tenesys remains HOGS’ strategic partner, ensuring infrastructure reliability 24/7, which allows the company to safely plan further development and strengthen its position as a leader in the logistics industry.
